Motivation

My Wi-Fi works great, except when I try to stream, download, upload, or browse. But, why? Even ChatGPT does not help much!

The Linux kernel provides general network interface statistics via different uAPIs. Many of those statistics go back to the internal struct rtnl_link_stats64. For Wi-Fi network devices, there is a driver interface called cfg80211, which provides Wi-Fi-specific statistics. Higher layer statistics for sockets are available via NETLINK_SOCK_DIAG netlink family. All of the above statistics can be accessed via the Netlink(7) kernel interface. Existing tools like iw(8), networkctl(8), ip(8) or ethtool(8) access those statistics already. But none of them is able to act as a logger.

Task

A logger for the above mentioned networking statistics shall be implemented using Netlink. The data shall be logged into a suitable format and later be processed for aggregation and compression. Appropriate visualization techniques shall be implemented. A test application shall be developed to test the logger.
