Performance analysis of an IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Body Sensor Network

Overview: Wireless Body Sensor Networks (WBSN) are a new class of wireless networks which give opportunities to new services for health monitoring and improve wellness and disease management tools. Scalability is a challenge shared by most of WBSN applications as it usually affects reliability and latency of message delivery to health care professionals. A typical WBSN consists of a multitude of heterogeneous sensor nodes with different network resource requirements like power consumption, bandwidth and reliability. Thus, providing quality of service (QOS) support in terms of reliability and minimum latency under severe energy constraints is often a difficult task in WBSN.

In a previous work, we tried to examine an IEEE 802.15.4 WBSN architecture and evaluated its suitability to support a high medical sensors density and a considerable amount of health data. We concluded from the performance evaluation results that the architecture scaled well with an increased number of sensors only when health data was transmitted at a modest packet rate. One possible approach to address this issue and improve the overall network performances could be to tune the parameters that control the CSMA/CA process and to use of the GTS (Guaranteed Time Slot) option on the MAC layer of the IEEE 802.15.4. In this project we are interested in evaluating this approach.

Project: The goal of this thesis is to examine related scalability issues in a WBSN scenario. The basic task of the student is to study the performances of an IEEE 802.15.4 based WBSN architecture when different sensor nodes share the same medium with different packet rates and packet sizes. Afterwards the student has to examine the effect of tuning the CSMA/CA control parameters on the performances of this WBSN architecture. For example, one such parameter could be the number of back-offs permitted to sense the wireless medium before declaring a channel access failure. The use of the GTS option will also be studied. The performance metrics of the WBSN architecture for this analysis are the energy consumption of the sensors, the throughput and the medium access delay. This project involves mainly simulations and analysis of the outcome and either the NS2 or the OPNET network simulator should be used.

Prerequisites: To accomplish this task, the student should have:

  • Basic Knowledge of Wireless Networks
  • Good C/C++ programming skills
  • Prior knowledge of the NS2 or the OPNET network simulator will surely be a plus but is not required
