Methods for CPNs are needed within several important application areas. We want to provide networking support that can be used within a multitude of different CPS areas. Yet, to meet realistic requirements and provide according solutions, we look mainly at one area. I.e., we use mobile robots that tightly cooperate via networks as an example for a challenging CPS which puts stringent demands on the according CPN methods. Nevertheless, we are convinced that our results can be transferred to other CPSs as well.
We propose methods for horizontal and vertical coordination and control of networked mobile systems such as robots. They will be able to adapt to changing environmental conditions and system requirements and also provide reconfiguration capabilities. To ensure latency demands, we tightly integrate networks, operating systems, and applications.
In order to enable networked mobile robots to perform individual and cooperative tasks, we will provide real-time support and network operations such as merge, split, and synchronize among clusters of such robots. Further, management functions will be developed to enable independent, but concurrent clusters to partition and share scarce network resources. Network resources will be considered in a broad sense (e.g., time slots, frequency channels, codes) and assigned by a novel scheduling algorithm. Thus, here a schedule means not only a sequence of time slots but it takes all mentioned dimensions into account.
