Generalized streaming over mixed infrastructures (GEMINI)

Introduction

Both the research group CM (communication and multimedia) at the Technical University of Braunschweig and the research group ND (network and distributed systems) at the University of Oslo and at Simula have worked on streaming for several years. The research groups will focus their cooperation on the application areas that both have experience in. For both project partners, this is on-demand streaming of high-bandwidth content at the one end, highly interactive latency-critical low-bandwidth content at the other end, and a limited number of application examples that combine requirements and features of these extreme application areas. GEMINI will provide the means for cooperation by exchange of personnel, which will increase the expertise of both groups. We will in particular use this opportunity to

  • Present existing solutions to each other in a series of seminars, and explore collaboratively the applicability of these solutions to mixed infrastructures
  • Develop scenarios and (simulated or emulated) workloads that we can expect from the combination of long-distance wired and ad-hoc infrastructures
  • Integrate prototype software
  • Cooperate in finding commercial partners and applying for EU funding that allows a more thorough investigation of streaming in mixed infrastructures and its application in commercial systems
This cooperation is sponsored by a grant from the the Research Council of Norway and the German Academic Exchange Service.

GEMINI Project Meeting in Oslo (October 2007)

Another GEMINI project meeting took place for two days in October 2007. This was a follow-up project meeting this time in Oslo. Both sides gave presentations about their progress and new topics and students were included as well. Plans for extended visits by master students for autumn 2007 and spring 2008 have been discussed and prepared.
