Motivation

The practical course provides an opportunity to familiarize oneself with Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and comprehend their fundamental principles and constraints. Following an introductory phase, participants are encouraged to implement their unique ideas. In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), a wide range of data is collected, processed, stored and transmitted by sensor nodes. The sensor nodes typically consist of a microcontroller, a radio transceiver, various sensors for recording environmental parameters, a storage medium and an energy source. The Institute for Operating Systems and Computer Networks has developed such a sensor node, which will be used in this practical course. Each participant will be provided with two of these nodes for the duration of the practical course to enable individual experiments and more complex experimental set-ups in small groups.

Content

The course begins with an introduction to programming wireless sensor nodes with RIOT OS in the C programming language. This is followed by an initial task that must be solved individually. After successfully completing this task, the students form groups of three to solve a more complex task. In the second part, the Industrial Communication Challenge will take place, in which an industrial sensor network is to be created and optimized in group work. At the end of the task, the solutions of all groups will compete against each other in the final event, and the group with the best optimized solution will win the Industrial Communication Challenge.
