Voraussetzungen:
In many of our projects, for example MMGW, costream or AdapXVid, our applications need helper services to provide optimized services for the users. Static configuration of these services is easy, but leads to suboptimal results and will not scale to larger networks. Configuration and discovery of services have been addressed in several network protocols such that arbitrary services can be located in a number of networking environments. However, these service location protocols do not address flexible composition of services according to the explicit and implicit constraints of users and services. On the other hand, for web services, reasoning along ontologies allows such service composition in a quite generic fashion. In practice, this seems to be quite complex. Such ontologies have already been used in service discovery systems like GloServ, which provides a global system for context-aware service discovery. However, service composition aspects are not very elaborate and it is still questionable if such approaches can easily be mapped on multi-media services. Our goal is to develop a service location and composition system that is applicable for all of our projects (and for an even broader range of applications, if designed carefully). In the end, a client application should be able to expose a number of features and requirements and receive an appropriate service configuration from the system. Example: A mobile user wishes to stream a certain movie with a good quality. The client device has a certain resolution and can process MPEG-4 (audio/video) presentations. The content must be located, and the located streaming server provides for MPEG-2 presentations. Thus, a transcoder must be found. Several transcoders can be located, and one should be chosen regarding system load on the transcoder and network costs. If we assume that the client application will use RTSP, the client will just have to be provided with the content URI and the address and port of the RTSP proxy (transcoder).
