Mobile devices are gaining popularity, and it is expected that the number of mobile devices will grow even more in the next few years. Very different types of mobile devices exist: telephones, agendas, PDAs etc. And it is expected that these devices will have sooner or later (some already have it) sufficient processing resources to be used as game clients. Another point is that, lately, multiplayer games have become very popular. Ad-hoc networks, i.e., networks without any fixed network infrastructure (such as base stations, etc.) are gaining much interest in research as well as in industry. With ad-hoc network mechanisms, clients which are in sufficiently close proximity are able to communicate directly without the need of further, externally provided, infrastructure. In this work we will study the problems that appear for multiplayer games in ad-hoc networks. An architecture will be designed to address and solve the identified problems and it will be implemented in a prototypical manner. In particular, the feasibility of using a Zone Server will be investigated, that means, that there are some players that are elected as Zone Servers. Each Zone Server receives the state change of only a group of players. Each Zone Server also communicates with the others to propagate the game state changes to all the players. |
