[tkined] Scotty response format & initializing arrays

I have two questions for which the answers may be in the manual page but
I've never been able to get the manual to function.

Why does scotty sometimes default to returning snmp get responses into hex
rather than returning the string (and how can I change this format back to
strings)?

How do I initialize the variables in an array to a null value so that I
don't get the error message telling me that there is 'no such value in the
array' till these variables have been set?
