FWIW the price of hubs with embedded RMON agents is so low these days it's
hardly worth trying to hack one up in software; e.g. the 3Com PortSwitch
Hub 40 has 4 segments with RMON1 on each, equivalent to a 4 port RMON
probe, for around 500 uk pounds for 24 ports (less for 12 ports).

The numbering of the interfaces on these devices is a bit peculiar and
fools some RMON clients, but I have a rather crude scotty script (hacked
up from the original ifload script in the examples directory) which
retrieves the etherstats group data from them.
