The mapping is defined in RFC 1908 section 3.1.2 paragraph (2). I
added a pointer to this RFC to the snmp(n) man page because I agree
that this mapping is not obvious if you are not familiar with the
SNMPv2 specs.

I'll say this in public, for those who might
otherwise miss the subtlety: Juergen, you
are too gracious. He did not merely "add ...
a pointer"; this reference is a good part of
the content of the first paragraph of `man
snmp`. Moreover, he advertised the same in
a letter circulated earlier this year.
