IntroductionVehicular Edge Computing is an emerging technology which extends the processing and analysis of data to the edge nodes at the close proximity of the vehicles, e.g. Roadside Units (RSUs). In this way, applications with low-latency and location awareness requirements will be made possible, and the amount of data to be transmitted to the central cloud will be reduced. The concept of Collective Perception, which is a service for Intelligent Transportation Systems currently in process of standardization by the ETSI, aims at extending the awareness range of ITS stations [0]. This is achieved by broadcasting Collective Perception Messages (CPMs) which contain information on objects perceived by local sensors like e.g. radar, lidar or cameras. That information can then help other ITS stations to "see" objects (e.g. pedestrians, cyclists or cars) outside of their own perception range. In this thesis, the concepts of edge computing and collective perception will be applied together on one of the promising use cases of V2X communications, i.e collect information and provide state information to drivers about the state of parking spots. V2X enabled vehicles driving on the roads will broadcast their perceived object information with CPMs. RSUs distributed in the vicinity will combine the information within these CPMs from several vehicles and determine the empty and occupied parking spots. This information can then be sent to the central server to create a database for parking spot occupancy, allowing drivers to query the state of parking lots anywhere in the city.
