Analysing the behaviour of network applications in various situations and scenarios is time-consuming. Network simulators such as NISTnet or NetEm faciliate such an analysis by providing tools to simulate the individual characteristics of a network link such as latency, jitter, packet loss and bandwidth.

In wireless networks, the available bandwidth is shared between nodes that are in communication range of each other and it is not shared between nodes that are further apart. Therefore a single bandwidth delimiter is not sufficient to describe such a network. Furthermore, the mobility of wireless nodes results in constantly changing networks.

In this thesis, we will analyse the characteristics of wireless networks and in particular wireless ad hoc networks. Existing network simulation tools are evaluated and compared if they can be extended to simulate wireless networks and such an extension is to be programmed. An evaluation will show that the result is well-suited for this purpose.

This thesis requires some knowledge about network protocols as well as good Linux knowledge. Programming experience in C is a plus.
