The need for speed: Realizing real-time wireless communication in mobile scenarios

Complex systems consisting of many devices are part of all of our daily life. Examples like aircrafts and cars showcase the use of many embedded devices, which together are used to provide a whole collection of advanced functionalities. A significant factor for meeting requirements in terms of reliability is the communication between these devices, as failure of communication can render the system completely or partially nonfunctional.

More often than not, bounded latency for the communication delay is required, in order to maintain a given level of reliability. Wired connections are often utilized used in real-time communication for their high transmission success probability and their high throughput. However, with increasing complexity, efforts are made to reduce the amount of cables required in many systems, leading to a need for wireless alternatives.

To realize real-time communication with existing wireless technologies, like Bluetooth or IEEE 802.15.4, many challenges have to be considered. One of the major performance influencing factors is interference from existing systems, as communications channels are not exclusive for an application. In this thesis existing approaches are to be evaluated as a basis for developing novel concepts for wireless real-time communications in WPANs and WBANs.
