Engineering Complex Communication Systems refers to all activities pertinent to specifying, modeling, designing, prototyping, building, testing, operating, maintaining, and evolving of complicated networking and communication systems, which can be exemplified as computer networks (from LANs, MANs, WANs up to the Internet ), land, mobile and satellite communications systems such as the PSTN, GSM, UMTS and LEO satellite networks, mobile ad-hoc networks and sensor networks, DVB-T and DVB-H networks, Personal Area Networks and Body Area Networks, and likely different blends of some or all of these systems. While in the past, relatively non-complex "traditional" communication systems sufficed for most operation and management applications, the new and emerging demands of applications and the evolution of network architectures now essentially "force" systems to be complex, given our current understanding how to engineer these systems. Complex communication systems are found in almost every industry, from telecommunications, aerospace and defense, medical and health, and many others. Unfortunately, the current state-of-the-art research and technology has clearly fallen far behind the requirements of complex communication systems. Tackling complexity is paramount in the growing Telecom industry. There are a few methodologies that are critical to this end. - Encapsulation and abstraction: to hide complexity for the end-users by encapsulating and to distinct between interfaces and implementations. Information hiding and simplification of re-use. Using a module, a designer only has to know the interfaces, but not the ugly underlying implementations. - Hierarchical decomposition: to recursively and gradually turn high-level abstractions into lower level implementations. This can be interpreted as a chain of subsequent actions or nestling of a module and its sub-modules. - Categorization and differentiation: to categorize and differentiate different levels of details. This gives different views of the system. This assembles the classical approach of "Divide and Conquer". - Open standards. This ensures parallels efforts will compatible to each other. Examples are (but are not limited to) software engineering, artificial intelligence, semantic web, control theory, autonomic communications and policy engineering, service oriented architecture et al. In this seminar, we offer all together 10 topics from both IBR and SSE, which are detailed as follows:
