In December, the Reliable System Software Group presents the System-Call Advent Calendar. For every day of December, we have one practical programming exercise in relation to one Linux system call or one Linux concept. For each door, there is an article, an exercise, and a prepared and commented solution.

However, as time budgets are usually tight in December, you might not have found the time to work through all of those 24 tasks. This seminar gives you the time and the credits for this. You will work on existing exercises and propose new ones. By presenting those concepts to your fellow students, you will have further the possibility to practice your presentation skills.

Your Tasks

For a successful participation in the seminar, you have to fulfill the following tasks:

  • Prepare an existing exercise and present the exercise to your fellow students in a 20-minutes talk.

  • Create a new exercise (description, code, solution) and present the exercise in a second 20-minutes talk to your fellow students.

  • Written seminar thesis that elaborates on the topic of your existing exercise from an academic point of view.

  • Actively participate in the peer review and peer feedback rounds for the exercise and the written seminar thesis.

Notes

The written seminar thesis must be submitted as a PDF. The length of the paper must be 8 to 10 pages, with a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 22 minutes for the presentation itself. Each participant must carry out independent research, e.g. on the Internet. The tutors will be happy to help at any time.

On the basis of relevant experience, it should also be pointed out that it is a matter of course that the paper must be written in your own words and that the copying and pasting of text passages, which is encouraged by the electronic reference of literature, constitutes an offence against the examination regulations.

Templates and assistance for LaTeX can be found on the page "Templates for papers at IBR". The use of LaTeX is mandatory. An example of an elaboration in PDF format: Example elaboration.
