Schriftliche Ausarbeitung und erfolgreicher Seminarvortrag. Die Note wird abhängig von der aktiven Teilnahme am Seminar sowie der Qualität des Vortrages und der Ausarbeitung bestimmt.

Vortrag: Ihr Vortrag sollte ca. 40 Minuten dauern. Das Medium ist frei, Sie können also Tafel, Overhead-Projektor, Beamer mit PowerPoint, Beamer mit PDF, oder was auch immer Sie sinnvoll finden, einsetzen. Natürlich sollten Sie bei exotischen Wünschen diese erstmal mit dem Betreuer klären, und unbedingt auch Programm-, Programmversions- und sonstige Kompatibilitätsfragen besprechen.

Ausarbeitung: Schreiben Sie eine Ausarbeitung, die Sie zwei Wochen vor dem Vortrag abgeben. Die Ausarbeitung soll ca. 5 Seiten lang sein. Generell interessiert uns aber, dass Sie da eine selbstverfasste Zusammenfassung eines selbst verstandenen Artikels abgeben. Mehr als zehn Seiten sollten es dennoch nicht werden, immerhin geht es hier um die Kunst des Zusammenfassens.

Das Seminar Algorithmik im Wintersemester 2009/2010 beschäftigt sich mit einer Reihe von aktuellen Artikeln, die relativ wenig an Vorwissen erfordern. Unten beschrieben sind die Originalauszüge der Autoren zu den eigenen Artikeln, die jeweils auf englisch erschienen, aber von überschaubarer Länge sind.

Thema 2: INSERTION SORT is O(n logn)

Traditional INSERTION SORT runs in O(n^2) time because each insertion takes O(n) time. When people run INSERTION SORT in the physical world, they leave gaps between items to accelerate insertions.Gaps help in computers as well. This paper shows that Gapped Insertion Sort has insertion times of O(log n) with high probability, yielding a total running time of O(n log n) with high probability.

Thema 3: How to draw a planar graph on a grid (Betreuer englischsprachig)

Answering a question of Rosenstiehl and Tarjan, we show that every plane graph with n vertices has a Fary embedding (i.e., straight-line embedding) on the 2n-4 by n-2 grid and provide an O(n) space, O(n logn) time algorithm to effect this embedding. The grid size is asymptotically optimal and it had been previously unknown whether one can always find a polynomial sized grid to support such an embedding. On the other hand we show that any set F, which can support Fary embedding of every planar graph of size n, has cardinality at least n+(1-o(1)) sqrt(n) which settles a problem of Mohar.

Thema 7: Cache Oblivious Distribution Sweeping

We adapt the distribution sweeping method to the cache oblivious model. Distribution sweeping is the name used for a general approach for divide-and-conquer algorithms where the combination of solved subproblems can be viewed as a merging process of streams. We demonstrate by a series of algorithms for specific problems the feasibility of the method in a cache oblivious setting. The problems all come from computational geometry, and are: orthogonal line segment intersection reporting, the all nearest neighbors problem, the 3D maxima problem, computing the measure of a set of axis-parallel rectangles, computing the visibility of a set of line segments from a point, batched orthogonal range queries, and reporting pairwise intersections of axis-parallel rectangles. Our basic building block is a simplified version of the cache oblivious sorting algorithm Funnelsort of Frigo et al., which is of independent interest.

Thema 9: How Difficult Is It to Walk the Dog?

We study the complexity of computing the Frechet distance (also called dog-leash distance) between two polygonal curves with a total number of n vertices. For two polygonal curves in the plane we probe an Omega(nlogn)lower bound for the decision problem in the algebraic computation tree model allowing arithmetic operations and tests. Up to now only a O(n^2) upper bound for the decision problem was known. The Omega(nlogn) lower bound extends to variants of the Frechet distance such as the weak as well as the discrete Frechet distance. For the one-dimensional case we give a linear-time algorithm to solve the decision problem for the weak Frechet distance between one-dimensional polygonal curves.
