Overview

The ITU defines the Internet of Things (IoT) as "a global infrastructure for the information society, enabling advanced services by interconnecting (physical and virtual) things based on existing and evolving interoperable information and communication technologies."

In this seminar recent scientific publications and related projects from the area of IoT should be summarized and presented.

Einzelthemen

B1IoT and the CloudDr. Dominik Schürmann

Accessing data in an IoT network must be done with client applications/services connected via APIs to the sensors/actors. Existing protocols such as HTTP could be utilized to access embedded constrained devices either directly or via gateways. In this seminar topic, current research should be evaluated regarding the usage of REST APIs, CoAP, and other existing web standards in the context of IoT. Literature research can be started using these papers presented on IEEE WFIOT conference 2015:

  • Models At REST or Modelling RESTful Interfaces for the Internet of Things Christian Prehofer (Fortiss GmbH, Germany)
  • Multi-Tenancy in Decentralised IoT Sylvain Cherrier (Université Paris-Est, France); Zahra Movahedi (Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, France); Yacine Ghamri-Doudane (University of la Rochelle, France)
  • Automated Mashup of CoAP Services on the Internet of Things Xiongnan Jin (Yonsei University, Korea); Kangho Hur (Yonsei University / Samsung Electronics, Korea); Sejin Chun, Minjung Kim and Kyong-Ho Lee (Yonsei University, Korea)
  • Using the MEAN Stack to Implement a RESTful Service for an Internet of Things Application Andrew Poulter, Steven Johnston and Simon Cox (University of Southampton, United Kingdom)
B2The Internet of Incompatible ThingsMartin Wegner

Are there standards emerging for IoT? What are these and what is their status? Convergence to common platforms and protocols?

  • HN discussion
  • "Why The Internet Of Things Might Never Speak A Common Language"
B3Internet of Dangerous ThingsProf. Dr. Felix Büsching

We hear much about the potential of connected devices: From "control your home" over "measure your environment" to "quantify yourself".

But, where are the risks? What are the costs? Who profits? What do we sacrifice?

Is everything just fine, or are there at least some realistic threats beyond conspiracy theories?

List some of the major risks of "connecting everything", find examples in the real world, and try to present a critical point of view on the IoT.

  • There are real and present dangers around the Internet of Things
B4Smart Home: Security and Privacy in IoT-based smart homesRobert Hartung

Today, home automation systems can be bought from various manufacturers. Most of these systems are proprietary and do not allow for an easy exchange of information with other systems. With the concept of the Internet of Things, new solutions for home automation will arise and may allow to share their data.

While it may be preferable to exchange some information with other entities, data from surveillance, a baby phone, or sensors to turn on and off the lights, should not leave the home. Research using the following paper, what security and privacy problems are and how they could be solved.

  • Network-Level Security and Privacy Control for Smart-Home IoT Devices Vijay Sivaraman, Hassan Habibi Gharakheili, Arun Vishwanath, Roksana Boreli, Olivier Mehani
B5Internet of Obsolete ThingsDr. Yannic Schröder

"Why does my microwave oven need WiFi?!" - "Well, to download security updates!"

The refrigerator that orders milk when supplies are running low was announced years ago. Even today hardly anyone has such a device. Recently Amazon started to sell this idea again as so called "Dash Buttons".

Many new IoT devices are emerging currently. Which devices are here to stay? Which devices failed the test of time and vanished already? What are the risks to invest in connected devices when their end of life is predetermined by the manufacturers support? What are the chances that I buy the "HD-DVD of IoT" instead of the "Blu-ray Disc"?

How fast does IoT technology become obsolete?

  • The internet of things: a survey Shancang Li, Li Da Xu and Shanshan Zhao
  • The Internet of Things—A survey of topics and trends Andrew Whitmore, Anurag Agarwal
B6SPHERE - a Sensor Platform for HEalthcare in a Residential EnvironmentProf. Dr. Ulf Kulau

Obesity, depression, stroke, falls, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disease are some of the biggest health issues and fastest-rising categories of healthcare costs. The associated expenditure is widely regarded as unsustainable and the impact on quality of life is felt by millions of people in the UK each day With a rapidly ageing population - could technology be the answer to some of these problems?

  • SPHERE Project

Ablauf
