>From a Windows-family machine:

  nbtstat -A <ip address>

will give you all NetBIOS names associated with the machine -- "computer
name" (NetBIOS node name), NT domain, and active User IDs, if any. It will
also give you the MAC address of the machine. If you're running a switched
network, your switches can probably tell you what port that MAC's connected
to via either the switch's command line or SNMP. (I have a Scotty-based
system that maintains a database of switch port, IP address, and
host/NetBIOS name of all machines attached to about 4-5000 switch ports at
12 sites to solve just this problem).

Subject: [tkined] looking up a mystery machine

I have a 60 node network over a few different buildings. Scotty tells me I
have a machine that I have no record of. It is consistenly up and running,
but
I have no idea what machine it is. Is there anyway I can discover the
netbios
name name or any other useful info that would help me know what machine this
is?
When I use snmp tools it just says connection refused. I am assuming it is
a
win98 box.
