[tkined] icon selection

I have only recently begun studying scotty/tkined, so I have not been
following this list for very long. Hope this does not revisit a stale
topic.

1. It seems that ip_discover uses a different mechanism to select icons
than does ip_layout. Also, ip_layout appears to ignore any selection from
ip_discover. Can someone explain the reasoning behind this design?

2. The mechanism used in ip-layout seems, to my experience, inferior to
that in ip_discover. The use of the unique OID programmed into each snmp
device, which is read-only, seems to me the better discriminator. This also
is consistent with the approach taken by OpenView, which ties oid to
symbol. Why was the ip_discover mechanism not continued in ip_layout?

3. In OpenView, the binding between symbol and oid is made in an auxilliary
file (oid_to_sym) which is read by the layout program (ipmap). It seems to
me that this form of extensibility is desireable, as new devices (with new
oids) are introduced every day. Administrators would not have to be coders
to adapt to new devices.

Finally, if I were to make such an adaptation, what is the preferred method
of making it available to others who might want it?

Thank you.
