You can't find the answer in an RFC. These lexical rules are actually
defined in the 1988 version of ASN.1. And this document reads hard.
Anyway, I checked the relevant paragraph and it looks like spaces are
only required when tokens otherwise turn into a single token. In this
case, there is no ambiguity and hence it is legal to have no spaces.

It turns out that this is a bug in the parser. We are planning to use
the libsmi <URL:http://www.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/projects/libsmi/) in a
furture version of scotty and I am sure that the libsmi can handle
this situation just fine.
