thanks Doug,

problem is, the PCs appearing as red/unreachable aren't in the lists!

Now I know where to look, though, I see that I'm not monitoring dozens of
key devices I thought I was monitoring :-(

So now I have 2 puzzles!
- how I lost the monitoring jobs I thought I had running
- how to get rid of the red/unreachable attribute on the PCs in question.

I've had this happen a few times: I think it's when the node is down at
the time I save my Tkined map - ?

For the benefit of others I think I've sussed that:
select node
right-click -> label with attribute
choose 'name'

I'm still a bit concerned about the first. I'm also a bit confused about
the various add-on menu items from the Tools menu - i.e. IP-Monitor, IP
trouble etc. If I select Tools -> IP-Monitor twice (inadvertently) I get 2
IP-Monitor menus. It would seem that if I use one to monitor some devices
and the other for other devices then I have completely separate monitoring
jobs, and there's no way to merge them so that if I delete one IP-Monitor
menu I lose all the monitor jobs I started from that one! I can see that
being able to fire up a separate instance of an IP-Monitor job might be
useful in certain circumstances (though I can't think what!) but it'd be
nice if it was made clear on the menu (e.g. the second instance coming up
as IP-Monitor(2) or suchlike.

However I seem to recall Juergen (or someone else) saying he'd stopped
work on tkined pending a thorough re-write - is this so? In which case
I'll stop banging on about these wrinkles!

regards,
