Are you on a Sun Sparc? If so, I'd recommend the binary distribution:

http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/solaris/sparc/GNUgcc.2.8.1.SPARC.Solaris.2.6.pkg.tgz
or the appropriate one for whichever version of Solaris you're using.

You can look elsewhere on sunsite for versions for older machines as well.
