Is tkined supposed to be a UNIX executable that starts
the editor? If so, which program in the scotty distribution
Oh, my. This is a subtler question
than you imagine.

I am working on BSDI 2.0.1 using tk4.2 and tcl7.6 (for
what its worth.)

P.S. Thanks to Cameron Laird for his helpful hints on
static linking and scotty compilation.

I hope I haven't helped lead you into
a swamp.

Juergen has used "scotty" and "tkined"
to label a couple of distinct con-
stellations of concepts during the
lifetime of this project. I see your
current confusion. I'll describe a
bit of the current state, and perhaps
others can chime in.

The "modern" approach to extending Tcl
is to have *no* dedicated executable
application of the sort you describe,
but only loadable object modules which
a standard interpreter or allied exec-
utive invokes as necessary. I personally
need statically-linked scotty, so I've
written up enough of the directions that
you were able to create the same. In
principle, either of us could also create
a statically-linked tkined, but I haven't
needed to, and you might not know how.

Incidentally, old versions of scotty--
2.0.something--linked statically, but I
do *not* recommend regressing that way;
Juergen puts way too much good value
into each new release to make that at
all attractive.

Frankly, we're stuck, for now; I know I
can do what you describe (link tkined
statically), and even have it on my
calendar for later in the year, but I'm
in a severe crunch with several deadlines
now. If someone can pay for even a
couple hours of consulting, I'll juggle
things to where I document the tkined
part within the next week. Without that,
I have to keep grinding forward on the
trajectory my customers have already
determined.

Suggestions, anyone?
