The major goal of my NM is to supervise a multivendor unix host park
with the standard MIBs and add some special application MIBs for
access to various applicaton production environments.
However, I found that most OS like ultrix, aix etc. only implement a
simple SNMPv1 demon or have very limited support for adding MIBs like
RFC1514 or plug-in agents.
I had a look at the cmu-snmp 3.2 patched for linux and it does quite everything
I need (BTW, thanks for the good work !), but it doesn't run on any platform
other than linux ... I could port the snmplib to all unix platforms, but major
things like rfc1514 support are implemented very machine-dependant.
I tried to get the "original" cmu-snmp 3.something from cmu and found
it's dead, i.e. there was no update since 1995, especially no snmpv2 support.
There was an snmpv2 project at University of Twente (called UT-SNMPv4), but
it only works on SunOS and does not support anything but snmpv2.
Q: Is there any public source tree that implements an snmpv1/2 demon for
all major unix platforms (perhaps even M$ NT ?)
Q: How difficult is it to port cmu-snmp3.2 to ultrix, aix, solaris, nt ?
(I mean the 'applications' not the library)
Q: Why is cmu-snmp still called cmu-snmp since there is no connection to
CMU but the original implementation long ago ?
Q: How about implementing an snmpd with tnm2.1.5 ... there are some examples
in $(SCOTTY)/lib/agents, but I'm not sure about performance issues and
porting the scotty interpreter to all my unix hosts ...
Q: Did I forget something important ?
Thanks
Bernd
