Meta-comment: Juergen, these apparently difficult
customers are a symptom of your success in deliver-
ing Scotty. You've done it in a way which is
conventional in (academic) Unix circles--well-org-
anized source, co-operation between small units of
functionality, reliance on public standards, ...--
but it's become apparent to me that many Scotty-ists
are not particularly comfortable with C, Tcl, or
SNMP, or, more importantly, principles of software
engineering. This is a criticism of no one; Scotty
is so rewarding that many people who just want to
get a (network management) job done are trying it
out, with more or less success.
I can think of no practical significance to my
observation; I have no conclusion as to how to
answer such pleas more efficiently. It has been
instructive for me, though, to glimpse a bit more
of the patterns of use of non-programmers, and I
thank you for that opportunity. Also, thank you
again, and always, for all that you've put into
Scotty.
