This is probably a memory problem. The best memory tester for
pc's is to recompile something big with gcc. I get this problem once
in a while when recompiling, say, the linux kernel. You can go back
and re-try the compilation and it might work. The problem is probably
either a marginal simm, which can either be replaced or somethimes you
can alter some bios parameters to give the chip a bit more time to
respond.
