I actually removed the entire continuation. Blank continuation lines
cause many makes trouble.

I wouldn't have noticed it except I was editing the generated Makefile
with emacs makefile-mode to test out some quick hacks before committing
the idea to configure.in. Makefile-mode does some rudimentary checks
for such problem contstructs.
