Hi,
I will attempt to answer some of your questions.

I have a similar set up - but have not used msql or Bones.

IP discover only merges nodes within a discovery session - as far as I can
tell. Thus if you discover two networks separately, they may not get merged.
It seems to work best on discvovering everything at once. Also how to tell
whether two nodes are the same is hard, let alone whether a node is a
potential gateway. Anyhow the method used is:
a) if node appears in a trace - must be a gateway
b) look to see if "other" address used in reply to trace
c) see if nodes have the sames name - must be a gateway
Then these gateways are merged and the best name choosen. I imagine it might
fail to merge all interfaces if they are not traced or identically named.

This leads to thoughts of a) using DNS to augment search, when people allow
one name to map to many addresses - although this can also mean one name ->
many machines giving identical service.
b) using SNMP which can give all this info.

Another thing I am looking at is providing an "IP maintain" type service,
which will add/delete to a map - with a 4 site network with > 3000 machines -
such a mechanism is needed. However has anyone else done this - or planning
to do so?

This too would be nice - some cross checking scripts (with optional
correction)? Again an area I shall be examining - but is anyone else doing?

Currently "IP layout" will set the host icon, but only if there is a HOSTINFO
record in the DNS. I imagine using SNMP ought to be an alternative for so
doing, but have not investigated fully.

Also will the next version of tkined have all the new commands documented?
Currently ined X where X can be:
id - obvious
parent - enclosing group if any
items - ?
collapsed - state of group
members - members of a group
flash - flash an entity?
postscript - ?
points - ?
dump - ?

Also what is a canvas?

I am sure some of these have been explained in past emailings - but I have
just changed jobs & did not take my mail archive with me :-(

Anyhow enough Q&A for the moment - may be some supplementary scripts later!
