RFC: merging tkined & scotty

Hi!

I am now working on the Tcl7.5/Tk4.1 compatible version of tkined and
scotty. Originally, I thought it would be a good idea to make tkined
and scotty two independend packages. This allows to make a new scotty
release without touching the tkined installation. (And this actually
worked because the communication protocol between tkined and scotty
has been stable for quite a while now.)

However, maintaining two independend packages makes my life a bit more
complicated (for example, I have to keep the configure scripts in
sync) and sometimes it creates installation problems because the
scotty sources contain scripts used by the tkined editor. And since
the tkined sources are actually quite small, I would like to merge the
two source trees.

Merging both software packages will allow to re-use some of the code
here and there. I am currently more and more thinking about scotty as
the main extension and tkined as an example management application
build on top of it.

So I am asking you for any good reasons why I should *not* merge both
packages. (I know, this merge will create some confusion but this can
hopefully be reduced by also merging the WWW pages and adding clear
comments about this merge to the README files.) Please send your
comments either directly to me (schoenw@cs.utwente.nl) or to the
tkined@ibr.cs.tu-bs.de list if you like to have a public discussion.

Juergen

PS 1: Nobody complained about removing RFC1441-RFC1452 style SNMP from
the scotty extension so this will be gone with the next release.

PS 2: See my new address at the University of Twente in the
Netherlands below. (My old email address will continue to work
so there is no need to re-send any mail or something like that.)
