scotty man page

Hello everybody,

On 20th Oct 1995, Juergen Schoenwaelder wrote in his message:

: etc. are very welcome).

About ten days ago, I retrieved the scotty v.2.0.2 distribution from
ftp://ftp.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/pub/local/tkined/scotty-2.0.2.tar.gz .
With the distribution, you get the scotty(1) man page in the
scotty-2.0.2/doc/scotty.1 file.

On the other hand, http://www.cs.tu-bs.de/ibr/cgi-bin/rman2html?scotty
also gives the scotty man page which I (partially) retrieved today.

I've compared the two man pages and have concluded that they differ
in contents, and it seems the rman2html?scotty gave me the latest
version of the man page, while scotty.1 file in the distribution is
an older version of the man page.

It would be nice if the latest version of all the man pages could
always be found in the distribution too.

Now, here are a few corrections of the scotty man page with reference
to what I've got from rman2html?scotty web page.

The manual says the following variables are set by scotty by default:

argc --> present
argv --> present
argv0 --> present
tcl_interactive --> present
scotty(library) --> scotty_library and scotty_lib are set instead
scotty(version) --> scotty_version is set instead
scotty(arch) --> scotty_arch is set instead
scotty(host) --> no such variable
scotty(user) --> no such variable
scotty_RcFileName --> present

The scotty_mibs variable is also set but is not mentioned in the man
page at all.

The manual gives the following syntax for some of the mib commands:

mib name [-exact] name
mib oid [-exact] name
mib syntax [-exact] name
mib description [-exact] name
mib successor [-exact] name
mib access [-exact] name
mib index [-exact] name
mib tc [-exact] name
mib file [-exact] name
mib [-exact] walk varname name body

Only the last one is the actual syntax, while in the preceding mib
commands, the -exact option should be placed just after the mib key
word, e.g. mib ?-exact? oid name.

Also, I would recommend sticking to the style of the original Tcl man
pages in the syntax of the scotty commands. For example, when
describing optional parameters, it would be better to use ?-exact?
instead of [-exact] because of the special meaning of characters [
and ] in Tcl.

There are also some spelling mistakes, but I'll send them to Juergen
privately :-)

That's (almost) all for now.

P.S. If you have read carefully the above report, you could noticed I
said "the scotty man page which I __partially__ retrieved today".
Yes, I have difficulties in reaching the sites in TU Braunschweig,
Germany, and retrieving on-line documents. Have a look at the
following ping statistics made today at European working ours:

----sol.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de PING Statistics----
1159 packets transmitted, 350 packets received, 69% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 2004/4943/7662

Probably, the main cause of the problem is overcongested 128 kBits
link between my local net in Croatia and the rest of the world (how
about German links to the outside world?). In fact, this is very
useful for protecting our net from foreign intruders -- it can be
called 'muddy moat' protection (ever heard of fire walls? ;-))

To retrieve anything at all, I need to use some non-interactive
retrieving programmes which repeat retrievals until the whole desired
document is actually retrieved. This works if the size of the
document can be got from the server. Unfortunately, this is not the
case for documents made in the fly by CGI scripts. The scotty man
page mentioned above is such a document. So, it would be very nice if
somebody put at least the latest versions of all scotty/tkined man
pages as *.1 ascii files on a ftp archive (I'll convert them by rman
at home). This would make my life much easier. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
