One immediate possibility without modifying the source code would be to
use something like an X11R6 pseudo server that didn't display anywhere,
Set it up in listen mode. Then, you could connect to the server and
see the map whenever you wanted. Sounds like a great idea to me. I just
might do it myself... :)
(after I get around to recompiling the latest version of X11R6 that is)
I'm sure there are other pseudo servers around that should be able to
manage this..
