A few weeks ago, I wrote that I will give it a try. One day. Well,
it took more than one day just to get a usable environment - but
this is another story. So here is my experience:
It is not as hard as I thought.
Some people say that this is no surprise because they believe that I
am a very sceptic person. But in this case, the Sun people really did
a good job. I have some of the TCP/IP utilities running and most of
the SNMP stuff. The biggest problem is that the current Tcl/Tk port
does not support file events. Therefore, all asynchronous commands
simply don't work. This will be fixed in one of the next Tcl/Tk alpha
releases as they are building a new IO subsystem into the Tcl core.
I expect that about 90 % of the scotty extensions will be running on
Windows once the final Tcl7.5/Tk4.1 port is available. However, doing
a Windows port costs a lot of cookies. So if you are interested to get
a Windows port soon, check out the cookies gallery and think about a
contribution. :-)
