xv is a popular graphical tool to convert bitmaps.

The pbmplus package is also very popular and consists of many simple
programs to convert many graphic formats.

X11 itself only has atobm, to convert a simple ascii input format to
the xbm fortmat.

to convert ps to xbm, you may use ghostscript, configured to be able
to create pcx or pbm format, or simply grab the ghostview X-output and
save/convert this (xv also can grab your screen/window, like xwd).

Hope this help's.
