.z (old style) and .gz (new style) are suffixes appendend by the
``gzip'' compressor from the GNU project (.z is used by the old pack
program too and therefore .gz is now preferred).
gzip can be found on the various GNU mirror sites, including our site
as ftp://ftp.ibr.cs.tu-bs.de/pub/gnu/gzip-1.2.3.tar .
